Diction 4.0 calculates the variables for 500-word chunks of an address. Thus, for each speech, I have from two to ten sets of scores for each variable. In the figures that follow, I offer the normal range, Mandela’s range, Mandela’s average, and a note as to whether his use is high, somewhat high, normal, somewhat low, low, or inconsistent. These evaluative terms are defined as follows: high (H) and low (L) mean that Mandela’s range and average exceed the normal; somewhat high (SH) and somewhat low (SL) mean that Mandela’s range extends beyond the normal but his average falls within the normal range; normal (N) means that both Mandela’s range and average fall within the normal range; and inconsistent (I) means that, whereas the average is normal, both abnormally low and high scores occur.

If we examine these fifteen addresses, variable-by-variable, we notice interesting trends.
